Stephanie Blyth - Primary trainee

What were you doing before SCITT?

Running a business that makes artisan seed paper and seed bombs.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I had originally taken my degree to go into educational psychology, to work with children with dyslexia. However, 16 years ago when i graduated, the route into that was years long and I was too keen to get into earning more money, so did Occupational Psychology masters instead but then got married and had children quickly so never went back to do my PhD or work in that field. Teaching was always part of the plan, with SEN elements, and I always looked at going back to do something similar and with kids that was difficult, but they got older and my circumstances at home changed and teaching became more and more the goal.

Why did you choose North East SCITT?

Location was definitely a big factor for me, I live very close by, my child also attends Shotton Hall so having that one day that I can drop her off was a big bonus. The course has a good reputation and awards and a friend of mine took this course a few years ago and was big part in my decision making as she had good things to say about it.

What would you say to anyone thinking of teaching?

Go into a school first, make sure it's right for you.

What has been your favourite part of training?

Seeing the kids understand something they've been struggling with.

Do you have any tips or advice for potential trainees?

Volunteer first.

What are you most looking forward to after completing the course?

Having my own classroom.
