Funding

You could be entitled to a bursary of up to £29,000 or a scholarship of up to £31,000. Bursary amounts will vary depending on your teacher training subject and degree classification.

Bursaries
Bursaries are tax-free payments paid over 10 increments throughout your teacher training year. You do not need to apply for a bursary, this is handled by North East SCITT and you will automatically receive payments, if you are eligible.

Scholarships
Some subjects have scholarships available for eligible trainees, however, you cannot receive both a bursary and a scholarship. Scholarships are tax-free payments awarded by organisations paid over a minimum of 10 months. If you are eligible, you can apply for a scholarship directly to the scholarship provider. In addition to the payments, you will also receive subject specific support, mentoring and networking opportunities.

If you receive either a bursary or a scholarship, you do not need to pay it back.

Eligibility for bursaries and scholarships

You must be eligible for Student Finance to receive a bursary or a scholarship (unless you're training to teach physics or languages) and have at least one of the following:

  • a bachelor's degree graded 2:1 or higher

  • a master's degree

  • a PhD

Student finance

You may be eligible for student loans to help fund your ITT year. You may also be entitled to additional funds for reasons such as low income and caring for disabled children. Find out more information here.

  1. Bursaries and scholarships are available to trainees on a tuition fee-based teacher training course in England that leads to the award of qualified teacher status. Availability is dependent on your highest relevant academic award and the subject in which you are training to teach. To receive a bursary or scholarship you must be entitled to support under the Student Finance England criteria. Residents of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will need to be entitled for support as set out by your country’s student finance body (Student Finance Wales, Student Awards Agency Scotland or Student Finance NI). Both elements will be assessed by your teacher training provider. Candidates with overseas degrees may be asked to formally recognise any overseas qualifications through UK NARIC. We can help you with this. Contact us on 0800 389 2500 and we can provide you with guidance on your equivalent qualifications and a free UK NARIC statement of comparability (this usually costs £49.50 plus VAT) once you’ve submitted your application to teacher training, if required by your training provider.

  2. Bursaries are available to trainees with a first, 2:1, 2:2, Master’s or PhD.

  3. Trainees in chemistry, computing, maths and physics are able to apply for a teacher training scholarship with the appropriate professional body. Scholarships are awarded in place of a bursary. Each of the professional scholarship bodies sets its own eligibility criteria - find out more on the dedicated scholarship pages. Scholarships are awarded in place of a bursary.
