What were you doing before SCITT?

I was studying geography at Northumbria University whilst working part-time in retail.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I had a healthy, happy school experience and I wanted to provide that same experience for other children. Seeing the response teachers had from students’ progress was heart-warming and I knew that, being a teacher, I would come home from work every day knowing I had made a difference and positively contributed to at least one person’s life. The life of a teacher appeared to be exciting and diverse.

Why did you choose Shotton Hall SCITT?

I had taken a long time to look around different teaching paths in the North East as I am not originally from the area so it was key that I took the time to research. Shotton Hall SCITT was recommended to me by people I had met at university and by professionals in the teaching industry.

What would you say to anyone thinking of teaching?

Absolutely go for it. I am not one for jumping straight into the deep end and wasn’t sure if I was going to 100% love teaching, as covid restrictions had meant I was starting the course with no previous school experience. However, it has been a huge confidence boost for me with regards to my personal development. With the support of the incredible SCITT team at Shotton Hall you feel safe and prepared for each step of training. You don’t know until you at least try!

What has been your favourite part of training so far?

Due to coronavirus restrictions, most of our training has had to take place virtually. This could have had a negative effect with regards to communication, however, the SCITT team ensured that this did not happen and they have given us every opportunity to discuss and share ideas as a cohort. With safety measures in place the SCITT team ensured, where possible, that we had face-to-face training which has been my favourite part; meeting new people from different careers, universities and areas of the country. Also, when the time came for my school placement I thoroughly enjoyed every single second!

How does teaching differ from your previous career?

Prior to teacher training I had been academically focused, going from GCSEs to A levels to degree. I was sure throughout my time at university that teaching was the path I wanted to take; I enjoy learning and applying geography to my every day life and I knew I wanted to use my love for my subject in this way.

Do you have any tips or advice for potential trainees?

Grab every opportunity you can and do not let the current circumstances of the ever changing world stop you from doing something you could love. Carry a positive attitude with you every step of the way; I have gone from two weeks of being in classroom to remote teaching and I am just grateful I have the opportunity to experience teaching in a different light.
