How to strengthen your Initial Teacher Training application

Updated: 3 days ago

Filling in your application is the first step towards a rewarding career in teaching. We’ve put together a list of our top tips to make the process as smooth as possible, strengthen your application and make yours stand out from the crowd.

Give a full chronological timeline

When filling in your education and work history, make sure you fill it in fully, without leaving any gaps. Any gaps you do have must be explained in your application. For example, if you were unable to work due to illness, this must be stated to avoid uncertainties with your application.

Check spelling and grammar

Attention to detail is great attribute to show when applying to any job but even more so for a career in education. Inconsistencies and mistakes in your application can give the impression that you have not put care into your application. Take your time, don’t rush it and get someone else to read over your application before submitting. Two sets of eyes are better than one!

References are up to date

When filling in your references, please ensure that they are up to date and include your most recent employer. If you have received your degree in the last 5 years, you must include at least one academic referee.

Be honest

Honesty is the best policy. If you have anything to disclose that may affect your application or the DBS process, please do so at the earliest opportunity. Due to the nature of the career, screening processes are detailed for a reason. Anything that should be disclosed but is not, will be found during these processes.

Qualifications are accurate

Ensure all your qualifications are entered correctly and are accurate.
